Australia’s summer sun is no joke – and while we can slip, slop, slap, our pets rely on us to help them stay cool and comfortable. At Ascot Vet, we see a rise in heat-related conditions every summer, from dehydration to burnt paw pads. Knowing how to protect your furry friend from the heat is key to supporting long-term pet wellness.
Here are our top vet-approved tips to help your pet beat the heat.
Know the signs of heat stress
Pets can’t sweat like we do. Dogs mainly cool down through panting, while cats lick their fur to regulate temperature. In extreme heat, these natural cooling methods often aren’t enough.
Watch for these common signs of heat stress:
- Excessive panting or drooling.
- Lethargy or confusion.
- Vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Bright red gums or tongue.
- Rapid heartbeat.
If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool, shaded area and call your vet in Perth immediately.
Avoid walks during peak heat
One of the simplest ways to prevent overheating? Time your walks wisely. Aim for early mornings or after sunset, and always test the footpath with your hand – if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.
Remember: even short walks in extreme heat can put your pet at risk.
Keep water everywhere
Make sure your pet has constant access to fresh, cool water. Place multiple water bowls around the house and yard. If you’re heading out, bring a portable pet water bottle and bowl – especially for dogs who love to tag along on errands.
Adding ice cubes to their water or freezing treats in blocks of ice is a great way to keep hydration fun.
Create a cool retreat
Pets need a shady place to rest. Indoors, draw curtains and use fans or air con if possible. Outside, provide shade that moves with the sun – think trees, umbrellas, or elevated pet beds.
Cool mats and damp towels also work well. For a little extra fun, let dogs splash in a shallow kiddie pool under supervision.
Groom, don’t shave
While it might seem helpful to give long-haired pets a summer shave, some breeds use their coat to help regulate body temperature and protect from sunburn. Instead, brush dogs regularly to remove excess fur and prevent matting.
