Common questions about desexing

1

When is the best time to desex my pet?

For most cats and some dogs, desexing is recommended at around 6 months of age. Larger breed dogs may benefit from waiting until 12-18 months or even older to allow for full bone development.  As the recommended age of desexing varies considerably between breeds we advise you to have a chat with one of our team before booking.

2

Will desexing change my pet’s behaviour?

Desexing can help reduce behaviours such as roaming, aggression, and dominance in dogs. In cats, it minimises spraying, calling, and fighting.

3

Does desexing have any health risks?

While desexing has many health benefits, there are risks to any surgical procedure.  The most common side effect we see is that some female dogs may have a higher risk of urinary incontinence if desexed too early. Other health effects have been reported for various breeds so we recommend our vets provide tailored advice for your pet.

4

Will my pet gain weight after desexing?

Desexed pets may have a lower metabolism, so monitoring diet and exercise is important to maintain a healthy weight.

5
