Keeping Your Dog Safe at the Beach

Keeping your dog safe at the beach

What you need to know before your dog friendly beach trip”

Having a family day out at the dog beach can be a lot of fun. Your dog gets their much needed behavioural enrichment and we get in our 10,000 steps for the day…

Here are some dangers to be aware of while at the beach

    • Do not allow your dog to eat anything at the beach. Many poisonous sea creatures that are washed up onto the shore are harmful if ingested, possibly even fatal.
    • Debris along the shoreline can also cause problems if ingested; intestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and intestinal obstruction.
    • Seek prompt veterinary advice to reduce the risk of serious complications
    • Keep clear of fishermen on the shoreline and discarded fishing tackle; fishing line and hooks cause severe trauma when dogs try to eat them.
    • Old fishing bait will also cause gastro upsets.
    • If your pet has eaten a fish hook seek veterinary attention immediately
    • Make sure to regularly offer fresh water to your dog while at the beach; dehydration and heatstroke are a very real risk
    • A thirsty dog may even attempt to drink seawater which can make them very unwell.
    • If you think your dog is suffering from heatstroke, offer freshwater, move them to a cool environment and seek veterinary advice
    • Always head to the dog beach prepared; dog water bowl, lead and poo bags are a must!
    • Remember to supervise your dog at all times; it is your responsibility to keep them comfortable and safe whilst they are at the dog beach.
